Depression is the most common mental illness. The reason is that depression exhausts your brain, and so makes you interpret reality in black or white, extreme and negative ways. Depression varies from ''the blues'' to something more serious culminating in a feeling of hopelessness and dispair. Dementia is a pattern of mental decline caused by different diseases or conditions. A person with dementia loses mental abilities. Memory loss usually comes first. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a type of mood disorder. Bipolar disorder was called manic depression in the past, and that term is still used by some people. It is a psychiatric illness that causes major disruptions in lifestyle and health. Everyone has occasional highs and lows in their moods. But people with bipolar disorder have extreme mood swings.
